When I download a Google Document as a PDF file or Word Doc so that I can print, my formatting is all screwed up. How do I fix this?
Text in Google Docs is basically HTML. When a document is created the web browser formats the text and pages based on HTML code. When you download the document as another file type Google has to perform a translation from HTML code into the programming code used by PDF files and Microsoft Word. As any body who can speak another language will tell you there is not always a direct translation, and unfortunately this is also true in the digital world.
To print a document and keep the formatting you need to use the web browser Google Chrome and then follow these steps:
1. Click on "Print"
2. This will bring up a new window
3. So that your printed document will not contain the website metadata at the bottom of the page uncheck "Headers and footers"
4. From the new window click on the box next to "Destination"
5. From the new menu choose the printer you wish to use
6. Now click "Print"
7. If you wish to save your document as a PDF follow steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 then from the menu choose "Save as PDF"
8. Now click "Save"

Why does the formatting of a Google Document change when I use a different computer?
Text in Google Docs is basically HTML. When a document is opened the web browser formats the text based on the size and font type.
Each browser renders fonts and pages differently. For example, a 12 point Arial font looks different in Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. This is why the same text and page breaks will look different across different browsers. This also happens across operating systems, for example Firefox in Microsoft's Windows 7 will render text and pages differently to Firefox in Apple's OSX.
Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to change this because it’s a side effect of the way browsers work.
How do I change the page settings in a document so that it is A4?
Google Documents are primarily designed to be shared online, however there are some times when you may need to print out a hard copy. By default the page settings in a document are set to "US Letter" to fix this so that your page will print correctly follow these steps:
1. Open your document and click on "File" then select "Page Setup"
2. In the new window click on Letter (8.5" x 11")
3. In the new menu select A4 (8.27" x 11.69")
4. In the new window click "OK"
1. Open your document and click on "File" then select "Page Setup"
